The Spice Market (Misir Çarsisi) or Egyptian Bazaar - Next to the Grand Bazaar, this is the largest covered market in Istanbul. This market was built in 1663 as part of the Yeni Camii (New Mosque) complex to help raise funds for upkeep of the mosque. The smells and colors are amazing. It was here that I bought - quite probably - the best pound of coffee ever.

Above Left: One of my favorite photos in Istanbul.

It doesn't take a lot of imagination to visualize how this must have looked and felt a century or two ago..

Above left: Two people having a lively 'discussion' outside of the market building.

Left: The coffee roaster where I got the most angelic Turkish Coffee. Still warm from the roaster when I got it. It perfumed the whole hotel room.

Above and Below: Some of the narrow alleyways around the market that also had shops. Every nook and cranny was an opportunity to sell something.
