The Grand Bazaar (Kapali Çarsi) or Covered Market - with close to 60 "streets" and around 4,000 shops, it is one of the largest covered markets in the world. It was completed during the reign of Mehmed II in 1461 and enlarged during the 16th century. Kapali Çarsi is more than just a bunch of covered shops however. It is also one of the most lively places in Istanbul. Beyond the actual shopping arcade are many tight alleys lined with shops filled to bursting with people and products. Behind every corner there is a shop, cafe or courtyard that invites exploration.

A map of the bazaar (you'll need one if you ever want to find your way out) can be found here, and a decent informational site about the bazaar can be found here. If you can read Turkish - this appears to be the official website: http://www.kapalicarsitarihi.com/index.php. I can't be certain since I remember very few of the words I learned on my visit.

Above: The streets surrounding the bazaar are often as interesting as what goes on inside. Great place for people watching.

The Nuruosmaniye Kapisi (Gate). One of the entrances into the market.

Below: the venders took particular delight in both watching us arm wrestle, and challenging us to the same.

Below: Some of the narrow alleys that become packed with a sea of people looking for bargains.

Further down: one of the many courtyards.
