Located at about 3,500 feet in the mountains above Chiang Mai, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is thought to have been founded in 1383. It is a major pilgrimage site, as well as a popular spot for foreign tourists. The temple has been remodeled repeatedly over the last 600 years and was renovated extensively in the 1990's. The central chedi was being renovated while we were there. The temple's location at the edge of Doi Suthep National Park is what makes it a must see.

Chiang-Mai.com is a great website for info on the temple. It includes a helpful map.

Top Left: The museum displaying articles of Lanna history, currency, crafts, etc. I love the tree, I am not certain but I believe it is a sal tree.

Top Right: Part of the wall surrounding the central chedi. Ringing the bells is supposed to bring good luck.

Below Right: The Large Bell Tower, below that is the small Bell Tower with another view of the museum next to that..

Below left: The main Chedi. This was obviously an important site judging by the number of people actively engaged in religious activity.

Below Right: Details inside the courtyard.

Above are pictures of the central chedi and the 306 nearly vertical steps up to the wat. The rails of the steps form a dragon tail. Kara is standing at the head of one of the two serpents. A funicular rail is available for the faint of heart who wish to forego the steps.

Thai's love their cats and dogs. They roam freely everywhere.
