While many cities in the old Lanna kingdom had moats and city walls, Chiang Mai is one of the few where the City Wall & Moat is still visible. The moat, in fact has a major road that runs adjacent to it. The road on the outside of the moat runs one direction with the road on the inside of the moat running the other. The old city wall is still visible at the corners and at the gates to the city. The wall and moat were built to protect the city from neighboring Burma.
