I am not a fan of large chain hotels but I'm not really what you would call a hostel person either. The Aurum Hotel Bangkok, was an excellent choice for us. It is a chain, but the hotel is fairly small. It's very near many of Bangkok's best tourist attractions but is tucked away in a little alley. Great river front views and clean modern rooms. It's a little pricier than many hotels in Bangkok but you get a lot of bang for the buck and it's quite affordable by American standards.
