Built in 1902 for the prosperous merchants, the Elisseeff Brothers, the Yeliseyevsky Emporium is one of the best examples of art nouveaux architecture remaining in the city today. Researching this structure was problematic since it seems to go by several names; Yeliseyevsky Emporium, Eliseyev Emporium, Eliseyev Trade House ensemble, Elisseeff Food Store and even the Akimov State Academic Comedy Theatre, (It seems the complex includes an auditorium now used by the comedy theater). I assume the confusion comes from the fact that Russian proper names didn't translate well from the Cyrillic alphabet, so Elisseeff, Eliseyev and Yeliseyevsky are probably all correct though the designer was most definitely Gavriil Vasilyevich Baranovsky , uh Baranovskii or is that Baranowski, (get the picture)?

The primary structure still operates as basically a high end supermarket. With 20' ceilings, stained glass windows and giant bronze allegorical sculptures of commerce, industry, science and arts adorning its facade - it is one hell of a supermarket.
