The Walker Center was constructed in 1911 and was one of the anchors of Exchange Place, the predominately non-Mormon business center in the city. The 16 story structure was the tallest building between the Missouri River and the Pacific Coast at the time of construction. The Walker Brothers were prominant bankers in the city and Walker Bank & Trust operated in the city until it was purchased by First Interstate Bank in the 80's.

Missing from this image is a radio transmit tower that was on the roof from the early 50's until the late 80's. What made it unusual is that the lights on the tower would glow differest colors depending on the weather forecast; Blue meant sunny weather, etc. Zoning laws forced the removal of the tower, but I understand it has recently returned in all it's weather forecasting glory. I remember the tower as a kid and look foreward to seeing it in action. Designed by renowned St. Louis architects Eames & Young, it was a modern structure boasting a men's bathroom on each floor.

I just couldn't resist posting this postcard I found online at Familyoldphotos.com.
