Salt Lake City had a trolley system until the mid 20th century when the auto became king. It now essentially has one again. Trax is the name for the Transit Express, run by UTA. Controversial at its inception, it was built in spite of an overwhelming defeat a proposed sales tax increase to fund the light rail project. In spite of initial skepticism, light rail in Salt Lake has been so successful that an east west extention was added to the original north south line, and that was later expanded further east to the University of Utah and is in the process of expanding west to the airport. More extensions are planned and Utah's first commuter rail has recently opened with daily service from Salt Lake to Ogden about 40 miles to the north.

At approximately 40,000 riders per day, it is so well used that at one time suspensions in the cars dropped due to the excess weight. Ironically, A sales tax increase was recently passed to help fund the remaining extensions to the line. http://www.rideuta.com/projects/commuterRail/default.aspx
