The Salt Palace Convention Center is named after the sports arena that once occupied the same spot on Main St. It in turn was named after a theater of the same name built in 1899. The current Salt Palace is actually a striking structure designed by the Atlanta firm of Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback & Associates. The center uses hollow steel tubes for much of it's structure. The windmills are actually part of an art installation designed by Patrick Zentz. The kenetic energy of the turning blades is converted to tones that you here when entering the lobby of the convention center. I was surprised to find a Wikipedia artical on the Salt Place here. I'm giving my age away here, but I was at the AC/DC concert mentioned in the article.
