Built by Orange J.
Salisbury, a - you guessed it - mining magnate, the New
York Hotel was constructed in 1906. A completely modern
luxury hotel, it featured steam heat and electric lights...in every room.
It was designed by Richard Kletting who was a very prominent local architect
of the period. Many of his structures still stand today. It's quirky faux-neveuax-mission
style architecture makes it unique. Located in what was once a crumbling
neighborhood, the fine old hotel was condemned in the 70's. Fortunately,
in 1978 Gastronomy - a local restauranteer restored the building as offices
with its flagship restaurant, "the New Yorker" located on the
main floor. This was one of the first post-urban renewal restoration projects
in the city.
