When it first opened in the first part of the 1900's, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts was housed in the top floor of the Park Building on the University of Utah campus. The Park building at the time was the central building on campus, but the space was a cramped - one room exhibition space for local artists.

The museum has a unique role of being both a University and a state run art facility. Since 2001, it has been housed in the Marcia and John Price Museum Building, still on the University of Utah campus. It was designed by the - Boston based - firm of Machado and Silvetti Associates and is an appropriate mixture of modernism and understated functionality well suited to it's role.
