This site has housed theaters since the 1880's. The fire of 1898 destroyed the opera house which was immediately replaced by the Dewey Theater. The Dewy collapsed under a snow load and was replaced in 1926 by The Egyptian Theater. With the discovery of King Tut's tomb in 1923, America went crazy over all things Egyptian and Egyptian style architecture became the rage, especially in theater design. The 400 seat theater was originally designed for both movies and vaudeville and was the first theater with sound in Park City.
