Started in 1981 by Edgar Stern and former NASCAR racer Roger Penske, Deer Valley is easily the cushiest resort in Utah and one of the most exclusive in the country. The terrain is amazing and the snow aint so bad either. While expensive, they do offer great deals for locals and opening day is a steal at around $20.00. It differs from many other resorts in two ways. First - while most resorts lease public land, Stern & Penske actually own the real-estate on which Deer Valley sits. Second, Deer Valley is one of only three resorts that still do not allow snow boarders.

Though he has no ownership in the resort, famous Olympic skier, Stein Erickson is closely associated with it. He helped plan the resort, starting back in 1977 and has been ski director there since it's inception. The Stein Erickson Lodge was named in his honor. The man turned 80 recently and the last I heard, he still skis every morning.

Took these shortly before the Olympics. Deer Valley was hosting some of the events and they already had the stands set up. Aluminum grand stands in subzero weather. We took to calling them freezer racks.
