St Maria Magdalen was built around the end of the 13th century for a convent established in 1255. For a time during the early 18th century, it became a Russian Orthodox church and was renamed Alexei Church. The church was remodeled in 1746 which resulted in the building we see today. In 1923, it was returned to Catholic hands and regained its original name. There was restoration work in progress at the time of our visit.
