Vecriga, Riga's Old City is what most people come here to see. It is located inside the city's original fortifications and there are extant structures dating back to the 15th century. Much of the city was destroyed during WW II, and most of what was left crumbled under Soviet neglect. Remaining structures have been repaired and crumpled structures faithfully restored. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Old Riga is a story book. Only residents are allowed to drive cars. As a result, Vecriga is a pedestrian delight, famous for its narrow and winding cobblestone streets, many old churches, and wonderful plazas.
