The Museum of the Occupation of Latvia. A fascinating museum, but unbelievably depressing. We were pretty mellow for an hour or two after walking through this museum’s exhibits describing the hell the country went through under the Nazis and the Soviets. Many exhibits contain items from Nazi internment camps and Russian Gulags.

The building designed by Gunârs Lûsis-Grînbergs originally housed the Latvian Red Riflemen's Museum. The statue of the Three Riflemen dominates the plaza behind the museum. Clad in copper, the museum served the Soviets well for propaganda and it is truly fitting that the current museum finds its home here. The museum opened in 1991 and there are plans for a large addition to be completed in 2010.

I highly recommend it but be prepared, as it is quite sobering.
