The Freedom Monument was erected in 1935 to honor those killed in the Latvian war of Independence. After many false starts, sculptor-Karlis Zale won the design competition with his entry, "shine Like a Star". The monument is of granite with travertine side panels. The bas relief depict Latvian culture and a copper sculpture of liberty caps the edifice.

Ironically - shortly after its construction, the Nazis rolled in to Latvia, followed by the Soviets. Latvia wasn’t free again until the 90’s. The Soviets intended to demolish the 138' tall monument but for whatever reason decided instead to use propaganda and alter its meaning to suit their needs. The monument has required major restoration due to climate and acid rain. In 1992, the Honor Guard was restored.
