The Hakone Tozan Scenic Railway is a short line that runs between Odawara Station and the Town of Gora in Hakone Fuji National Park. The line climbs about 1700 ft in less than 10 miles and takes about 35 minutes. This train is not covered by the Japan Rail Pass but is part of the Hakone Free Pass that gives you two days of unlimited access to several modes of transport in the Hakone region for something on the order of $5.00. It's a pretty cheap ride, so the pass is only worth it you are taking the Hakone Round Course. The train was fun in the inclement weather that we dealt with. I can only imagine how nice it would be on a summer afternoon. Our hotel in Hakone was located along this line. One of the few times in my life that I didn't mind having a room next to the tracks. |
