founded in 1202 by the monk Eisai, Kennin-Ji is said to be the oldest Zen temple in Kyoto. Eisai - I also find the name Yousai and assume they are the same person though I have not confirmed this - is generally credited with bringing Zen Buddhism to Japan from China. As with most ancient complexes in Japan, none of the original buildings remain, having fallen victim to fire, war and sometimes neglect. The oldest extant buildings in this complex date back to the late 16th century. You can find additional information at kinninji.jp, Worldvisitguide.com and of course, our old friend Wikipedia. |
