The Zoological Museum is a research unit of the Finnish Museum of Natural History. This beautiful neo-baroque building (originally called the Gymnasium of Alexander) started life in 1913 as a Russian school for boys. It was designed by an educator, Lev Siško and his architect assistant, Mihal Tšaiko (both of St. Petersburg). After Finland's declaration of independence, it served as a cadet school for the newly formed Finnish military until it was purchased by the University of Helsinki to house their Zoological collection.

A site with lots of detailed information is on the Museum of Natural History's website.
