Founded in 1640, the University of Helsinki was originally known as The Royal Academy of Turku. After a fire leveled Turku in 1827, the university was moved to Senate Square in Helsinki. The main university building was designed by Carl Ludvig Engel, who also designed Senate Square. While the main building is still the center of university activity, other campuses have been added to accommodate the approximately 38,000 students enrolled here. |
