Originally founded in the 1690's as Petjärvi estate and ironworks Strömfors Iron Works at Ruotsinpyhtää was sold to two Swedish merchants, Jakob Forsell & Anders Nohrström in 1744. The current name of Strömfors was a combination of the names of the new owners. None of the original buildings survive but a many of the extant buildings date from the mid 19th century. A brick water forge serves as a museum and the whole complex lies in a rather idyllic setting.
