Originally the Lounais-Soumi Tuberculosis Sanatorium, the Paimio Sanatorium was pioneering in it's time. Designed in 1928, it is one of Alvar Aalto's earlier works. It was pioneering in it's functionalism. Everything, right down to the color scheme, was designed with the comfort and care of the patient in mind. Much of the furniture was also designed by Aalto and was intended to "soften" the clinical atmosphere of a place designed for the treatment of people who were gravely ill.

The building's color scheme and furnishings were unique for the time.
