Kumpolan Siirtola (Allotment Garden). A unique garden community. In the early part of the century, these lots were owned by the city and leased to the public. This allowed working class city dwellers the chance to have a full garden. The homes are very tiny and lack running water or electricity, but act as sort of a “cabin” in the city. There are a couple of these gardens in Helsinki.

The Museum on the site, known as Museomokki, was originally built in 1929 out of parts from a railway container. It is a good example of the average home on these allotment gardens. The curator was really cute. You could tell that having a group of American students visit was the most exciting thing to happen at her job in a long time.
