Located between Senate Square and the Helsinki Market, Helsinki City Hall (Kaupungintalo) is prime real-estate. Designed by Carl Engel, the building opened in 1833 as the Seurahuone Hotel, a fine hotel and spa for well heeled Russian gentry. It was purchased by the city in 1901, though the hotel continued to operate for some time. The building was converted to city offices in 1913 and served as a hospital during the first world war. |
