The Tar Boats were, as the name suggests, used for carrying tar. The boats are about 45 ft long and could carry 25 barrels of tar. The boat house was from Paltamo, a municipality smack in the center of Finland.Tar was made from the pitch of pine trees and its export for use in sailing vessels was Finland's primary export up through the 19th century. Unfortunately the boathouse was locked while were there and we could not get in to see the boats.
