Started in 1816 shortly after Finland's transfer to Russia, the National Archive was started to store and record documents related to the transfer of Finland from Sweden. Over time the mission of the archive grew and the archives of other state agencies were moved here. It's primary mission is to preserve documents and promote research. The building was built in 1890 and designed by Karl Gustaf Nyström, a professor of architecture at the Polytechnic Institute. Constructed in a neo classical style that is very fitting for the Senate Square area, I really enjoyed all the cast iron details. We weren't there for research but had a great time just wandering around. Most of the building has remarkably open access compared to US facilities that would never let a bunch of foreign students wander the halls unescorted. http://www.narc.fi/Arkistolaitos/eng/
