Though it may be a tourist trap, Khan al Khalili is authentic Cairo. The bazaar has been in operation since the late 14th century and parts of it are original. It was called the Turkish Bazaar during the Ottoman period. They sell just about everything you could imagine here. Most of the stuff is tourist trinkets but the neighborhood is colorful and there is an occasional find. Don't forget to barter. It is absolutely expected.

Various images of the bazaar. Kara took the two above.

Below: The architect in me finds the structures that surround these narrow alleys fascinating.

Above: Midan El Hussein, the mosque across from Khan al Khalili. Not really a local mosque, it is frequented by Arab tourists.

Left: A row of coffee shops at the entrance to Khan al Khalili. Taken by Kara.

I do love me a good cup of Turkish coffee.
