Construction began on The Citadel in 1176. Constructed by Salidin, its purpose was to fortify Cairo against the crusaders. Enlarged by the Mamluks, and later the Ottomans, it was the seat of power in Egypt for about 700 years. Most of the complex was demolished and/or remodeled by the ruthless Albanian Pasha - Muhammad Ali - in the early 19th century. It's primary attraction now days is Muhammad Ali's grand Alabaster Mosque and the striking views of Cairo from its terraces.

Views of the tower and other buildings on the Citadel grounds.

Some of the best views in Cairo.
