The Temple Events
Center began life in 1899 as the Temple Emanuel
Jewish synagogue. The original building was built in 1882 and was the
first major Jewish synagogue in the region. Fire destroyed most of the
building in 1897 and what you see now is a result of the 1899 reconstruction.
The Moorish design by architect, John Humphreys stands out among the Victorian
buildings and low rise businesses that surround it. An addition designed
by Humphreys' apprentice, Thielman Robert Wieger was completed in 1924.
The original congregation moved to a larger facility in 1956. The structure
features 100' towers with Turkish domes, stained glass and an original
1911 Estey pipe organ - supposedly the oldest Estey in existence. Listed
on the local and national historic registers, the buiding now houses a
conference and events center with an auditorium and ball room.
