The
Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires, AKA MALBA
opened in 2001. Initiated by a wealthy Argentine industrialist & philanthropist
named Eduardo F. Constantini, it is a wonderful museum dedicated to Latin
American contemporary art. The building was the product of a 1997 design
contest and is the only large museum in the country specifically designed
for that purpose. The structure was designed by three Argentinean architects
from Córdoba, Gaston Atelman, Martin Fourcade & Alfredo Tapia.
It is a striking building with a definite modernist bent, totally appropriate
for the contemporary art in the collection.
